Hello everyone and welcome to the upcoming summer Yuri anime 2020 blog.
Now I’m not gonna lie, 2020 is probably the worst season we’ve had yet since I started writing these blogs.
It’s very barren, it’s so barren that I think someone salted the earth.
And I just really don’t have a lot for you but don’t worry I have a little something extra for you to keep you occupied during these hot summer months.
So let’s jump on in!
YURI ANIME 2020 LIST
1. Lapis Re:Lights
First up on the list we have lapis re:lights by Studio Mausu and it’s an idol anime with a fantasy twist to it.
The show takes place at a school that trains people in the art of magic and music.
It follows our fish-out-of-water character “Tiara” as she enrolls into the school and gets put in the absolute worst idol unit.
With the threat of having every member expelled if they don’t do well in the coming exams.
So far one episode has been released already, which I guess you can’t really say this blog is about upcoming Yuri anime anymore…
But I watched it and I liked what I saw…
There’s definitely quite a bit of subtext here between the main character and her friend “Rose”.
And I think it’s a rather unique twist on the idol genre…
My only real gripe with it so far is, Funimation is doing a terrible job subtitling it.
They translated Tiara Chan as titi…
That’s not a joke, that’s what they actually did.
But I guess we’ve all come to expect this from Funimation at this point.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of the show just not looking forward to these subtitles.
2. Cooking with Valkyries 2
Next up we have cooking with Valkyries 2 – a short seven min per episode anime by Studio blade.
It’s a spin-off of the popular Honkai Impact mobile game where the characters from that game basically just cook some stuff.
Seems like a rather nice slice of life…
I haven’t seen the original season but I have read one of these spin-off mangas from Honkai Impact.
And yeah, there’s uh… there’s definitely some Yuri in that one so I’m expecting a good amount of subtext here.
The show premieres July 17th 2020.
Last up we have an honorable mention…
UmaYon is a spin-off of the anime Uma Musume, which is an anime about “horse girls” and it’s just as weird as it sounds.
It’s a very short three-minute per episode spin-off and there probably won’t be really much of anything to speak of in this show.
But Uma Musume did have some pretty good subtext in it and I watched the first episode of this and it was pretty funny.
So I just thought I’d mention it here if anyone was interested.
So this is the most barren season we’ve had since I started doing these blogs and because of that I decided to give you a little bit of a bonus here at the end.
When it comes to Yuri, I actually read a lot more Manga than I do watch anime.
This is entirely due to the fact that there is a whole lot more Yuri Manga than there is anime.
So since there’s almost nothing airing this season, why don’t I give you some nice Manga recommendations?
All of these Manga are currently getting new chapters and are ones I’ve been quite enjoying so far…
YURI MANGA LIST
1. I Favor the Villainess
First one up and the newest of the bunch is I favor the villainess.
It is a Manga adaption of a web novel and is a Isekai with a Yuri twist to it.
Our main character was an office lady named “Oohashi Rei” who one day wakes up as the protagonist of her favorite otome game「Revolution」.
Now while her favourite game is an Otome game, it’s not actually the boys she’s interested in.
Instead, it’s the villain and rival “Claire François”, a rich girl who’s also quite the bully.
But despite her attempts to make Rei’s life miserable, she just can’t help but love her.
So far there’s only one chapter that’s been translated but it’s really funny and I’d be surprised if this doesn’t get an anime adaption in the future, definitely check it out.
2. Crescent moon and Doughnuts
Next up is a bit more serious of a work, “Crescent moon and Doughnuts” by Usui Shio.
In it, “Uno Hinako” our main character strives to be what she perceives as a normal woman.
Always dressing stylishly, wearing makeup and falling in love.
However, she just can’t bring herself to pursue a romance that is at least until she gets close to her stoic co-worker “Satou Asahi”
Now that description is not the best but it’s a really hard work to describe.
It’s a very introspective work that deals with themes of the self and the expectations that are put on to us and that we put on ourselves…
especially when it comes to love and romance.
But that’s not to say it’s overly dark at all, I think it strikes the perfect balance between drama and sweetness.
It’s really nice seeing these two main characters come together and learn things about themselves.
I’m really enjoying it and I hope you check it out.
3. The Two of Them are Pretty Much Like This
Now if you’re in the mood for a more down-to-earth Yuri Manga, where the couple is already in a relationship and they don’t spend the entire Manga trying to get to that point.
Then, ”The Two of Them are Pretty Much Like This” by “Ikeda Takashi” is just for you.
It’s a really nice little slice of life about two girls, a freelance writer named “Sakuma Elly” and a rookie voice actress named “Inuzuka Wako”
Living together and just going about their daily lives, both just trying to make it in this world together.
I really like the art style of this one, it really encapsulates the more mature tone the story has.
So if you want something more relaxing to read then this one’s for you.
This next one is by an author I’ve liked for quite a long time “Vampeerz” by “Higashiyama Show” is about a girl named “Ichika”
Who on the day of her grandmother’s funeral, meets a mysterious girl named “Aria”.
Ichika is taken aback by this beautiful looking foreign girl, who oddly says she’s a friend of her grandmother.
It’s not long before she discovers that Aria is actually a vampire and that Ichika’s family is guarding a special relic that is the only thing that can kill vampires.
This is a beautifully drawn Manga with an engaging and often funny story.
And not only that, but Higashiyama on the show understands the finer arts of Yuri very well.
If you’re looking for something a lot more story and character driven, you really can’t go wrong with this one.
I’d love to talk more about it but I’ll probably have to wait until this Manga finishes.
Until then I’ll be eagerly awaiting for more chapters.
All the works I’ve mentioned are currently on dynasty scans so go on over there and check them out if you’re interested.
Thank you very much for reading everyone, it’s a shame that this season is really barren but you know there’s always a calm before the storm.
And I think either next season or the season after we’re gonna have an avalanche of Yuri.
We already know an anime adaption of “Adachi and Shimamura” is coming and time will only tell what else we have to look forward to.
Also if you have any recommendations for Yuri Manga, let me know down in the comments below I’d love to hear it.
I’m honestly probably reading them all already but I’d love to hear what you’re enjoying.
